Boston Celtics Coach Fired

Celtics Name Joe Mazzulla Permanent Head Coach

Udoka Suspended for Improper Relationship

The Boston Celtics have named Joe Mazzulla as their permanent head coach, the team announced Thursday. Mazzulla had been serving as interim coach since Ime Udoka was suspended for the entire 2022-23 season for an improper relationship with a female member of the team staff.

Investigation Found Multiple Violations

An investigation by an independent law firm found that Udoka had engaged in multiple violations of team policies, including having an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate. The Celtics said in a statement that Udoka's behavior was "unacceptable" and that they "will not tolerate any form of harassment or discrimination."

Udoka Apologizes for Actions

In a statement released Thursday night, Udoka apologized for his actions and said he accepted the Celtics' decision to suspend him. "I want to apologize to our players, fans, the Celtics organization, and my family for letting them down," Udoka said. "I am proud of what we accomplished together last season, and I am sad that I won't be able to continue on that journey with the team this year."

Mazzulla Led Celtics to Playoff Berth

Mazzulla, who was an assistant coach with the Celtics before being promoted to interim head coach, led the team to a 42-21 record in the first half of the season. The Celtics finished the regular season with a 51-31 record and earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. They lost to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Celtics Hope for Success Under Mazzulla

The Celtics are hoping that Mazzulla can continue to build on the team's success under Udoka. Mazzulla is a young, energetic coach who has a good relationship with the players. He is also a strong tactician and knows how to get the most out of his players.
